Network Security Assessment
|
There are hundreds of techniques used to compromise both Microsoft Windows and Unix-based
systems. Malicious code and new exploit scripts are released on a daily basis, and each
evolution becomes more and more sophisticated. Keeping up with the techniques and systems
used by hackers in the wild is a formidable task.
Arkateq therefore believes it vital to gain the assurance that the security of your
current network infrastructure is sufficient, and to monitor this proactively on a
daily basis.

What is external security testing?
|
External security testing or security scanning is the process of evaluating your
information security measures in detail. The security measures are actively analysed
for design weaknesses, technical vulnerabilities and flaws. The results are delivered
in a comprehensive report.
|
- Identify the threats facing your information assets so that you can quantify your
risk and provide adequate information security expenditure
- Reduce your organization’s IT security costs and provide a better return on IT
security investment (ROI) by identifying and resolving vulnerabilities and weaknesses
before they are exploited.
- Provide your organization with assurance of information security.

Service offerings
|
- Security Audits
- External Security Testing
- Internal Security assessment
- Application Assessment
- Automated security testing and internal assessments.
|
Type of approach
|
External security tests can be conducted in two ways: black-box (with no prior knowledge the
infrastructure to be tested) or white-box (with complete knowledge of the infrastructure to
be tested).
In order to be more efficient the white-box approached is preferred. This will provide better
results as specific tests are performed according to the infrastructure configuration.
|
Technology used
|
The Security scanning and testing is performed with a bundle of the most reliable and up-to-date
security scanners available. Arkateq makes use of a combination of best-of-breed open source and
proprietary products that forms a unique security assessment solution. The technology behind the
tools has been extensively tested and proven over time, on huge networks and international clients.
The security scans tests for more than 7000 security holes, problems and weaknesses in your
network. This includes all the latest security problems discovered up to the day the scan was
performed.
|
|
External security Testing
|
External security testing will focus on your servers, usually Internet based or accessible
from outside the company. This type of testing involves a comprehensive analysis of publicly
available information about the target, a network enumeration phase where target hosts are
identified and analysed, and the behavior of security devices such as routers and firewalls
are analyzed. Vulnerabilities within the target hosts are identified, verified and the
implications assessed. Solutions are then provided.
|
|
Internal Security Assessment
|
This is a similar testing method, but provides a more complete view of your network
security. Testing is performed from a number of network access points within your
company network. Servers, desktops and mobile computers should be probed and tested
over a period of time to asses the true level of security. (70% of all security
breaches happen from within the company network.)
|
Automated Security Testing – “Snitch”
|
The unique Arkateq Snitch will update itself automatically with the latest security
vulnerabilities and then perform these vulnerability tests on you network and/or
servers from inside. The outputs of these scheduled scans are stored in a cumulative
database. This process is automatic and no human interaction is required.
Any security problems encountered will be reported. This will ensure that you keep
ahead of hackers and stay in touch with the latest security vulnerabilities.
The system can be managed remotely by Arkateq or locally managed by your own security
department. Your staff will have to be trained by Arkateq to use the system to its
full potential.
Reports
The reports for the security assessment are divided into three sections: Executive
summary, management overview and technical detail, each section specifically targeted
at their intended readership. The report will be clear, easy to understand, and most
important, it will be of value to you, the customer.
The deliverables include presentations and comprehensive reports describing our
findings in order of risk. Arkateq will include detailed remediation steps on how
to solve all the security risks presented in the report.
